Amen, Daniel G.
In order to make muscles grow, one must eat right, exercise and force the muscles to do new things; the same is true of one's brain-which is just one of the things to learn from this short but informative audiobook from one of the world's leading experts on how the brain works. Works of this sort usually aren't well suited to audio, and this one is no exception. Unless listeners are studiously taking notes while listening, they will need to find a hard copy when the time comes to apply Amen's advice. However, Amen's friendly and warm narration relates the precepts of his brain-boosting program in a way that makes them easy to understand and absorb. The audiobook becomes repetitive when Amen tries to reinforce certain points, but this production is otherwise enjoyable and will leave listeners eager to implement some of the strategies outlined. Amen is a renowned keynote speaker and frequently appears on TV, so there's no surprise that his engaging and exuberant style makes this a fascinating exploration of how the brain works. -- Publisher's Weekly

Chara, Kathleen; Chara, Paul
Allergy Busters is a practical guide to help children struggling with allergy problems. It follows the experiences of Karston, who, in addition to autism-related problems, suffers from food and environmental allergies. He relates the struggles, frustrations, and disap-pointments in battling allergies, before coming up with a solution the four Allergy Buster Keys. These effective methods for overcoming allergies are presented as a child-friendly plan leading to an allergy-free diet. The keys demonstrate how children with al-lergies can lead fun-filled lives by following simple, easily-attainable guidelines to man-age their allergies. Children on the autism spectrum suffering with gluten and casein allergies require professional services in addition to intensive family involvement. This book will be an asset to parents and professionals working with children on the autism spectrum who are struggling with allergies, as well as an informative resource for allergy sufferers themselves. The guidelines provided are both innovative and rooted in mainstream psychological principles, applicable to any child with allergy problems, not just those on the autism spec-trum. Written in a style that encourages the child to assist adults working with him or her, the authors have included a behavioural chart to track progress along the 'Allergy Buster System', as well as certificates for those children who succeed in becoming 'al-lergy busters'.

Christensen, Larry
In the midst of confusion and misinformation in both public and professional circles, there is a small but growing body of scientific literature on the effect of diet and various specific nutrients on behavior. Psychologist Larry Christensen has written Diet-Behavior Relationships to summarize the research in a form that will be useful both to researchers in this relatively new field (listing issues and methodological concerns that must be addressed in future research) and to practitioners who wish to understand how the current state of scientific knowledge can be applied in the therapeutic context. In this book, Christensen examines the historical context; strategic and methodological approaches; neurobiological and psychological mechanisms underlying the behavioral effects of food, focusing on depression; and recent findings on a number of specific nutrients and dietary components (including L-tryptophan, caffeine, and sucrose) as they relate to physical and psychological conditions such as premenstrual syndrome, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, seasonal affective disorder, autism, and Down's syndrome. He concludes with recommendations and caveats for applying current knowledge about nutrition as an adjunct to more conventional therapy.

Fitzpatrick, Michael
With eloquent and persuasive writing, Fitzpatrick uncovers the political agendas that lie behind current fears of an autism crisis, and challenges the epidemic of unproven and expensive treatments. He shows us that our children are indeed being helped tremendously, not by unscientific autism treatments that falsely promise cure or recovery, but by educators, scientists, evidence-based therapies, and new understandings of what it means to be human, and different, in the twenty first century. If my child were diagnosed with autism today, I would turn to Dr Michael Fitzpatrick for guidance. -- Roy Richard Grinker, Professor of Anthropology at George Washington University, USA and author of Unstrange Minds

Fitzpatrick, Michael
Autism: disease, disorder or difference? What causes autism - genes or environment? Can biomedical treatments cure autism, and are they safe? An increased public awareness of autism has resulted in a rising trend of diagnoses, creating the impression of an 'epidemic'. Many parents of children newly diagnosed with autism have been impressed by plausible theories blaming vaccines and other environmental causes. Many have also been captivated by claims that 'biomedical' treatments - including special diets and supplements, detoxification and medications - can achieve dramatic results. In "Defeating Autism", Michael Fitzpatrick, a family doctor and father of a son with autism, questions the scientific basis of environmental explanations of autism and exposes the incoherence of unorthodox 'biomedical' theories and therapies. This book reveals that these therapies are far from pioneering interventions and they remain unsubstantiated by scientific authorities. Campaigns promising to 'defeat or cure autism now' have attracted much support among parents struggling with their difficult children. But the crusade against autism risks dehumanising and stigmatising those who are identified as autistic and their families. This compelling book is essential reading for students and professionals working in the field of autism, as well as academics concerned with the public understanding of science and the treatment of scientific and medical controversies in the media.

Offit, Paul
A London researcher was the first to assert that the combination measles-mumps-rubella vaccine known as MMR caused autism in children. Following this "discovery," a handful of parents declared that a mercury-containing preservative in several vaccines was responsible for the disease. If mercury caused autism, they reasoned, eliminating it from a child's system should treat the disorder. Consequently, a number of untested alternative therapies arose, and, most tragically, in one such treatment, a doctor injected a five-year-old autistic boy with a chemical in an effort to cleanse him of mercury, which stopped his heart instead. Children with autism have been placed on stringent diets, subjected to high-temperature saunas, bathed in magnetic clay, asked to swallow digestive enzymes and activated charcoal, and injected with various combinations of vitamins, minerals, and acids. Instead of helping, these therapies can hurt those who are most vulnerable, and particularly in the case of autism, they undermine childhood vaccination programs that have saved millions of lives. An overwhelming body of scientific evidence clearly shows that childhood vaccines are safe and does not cause autism. Yet widespread fear of vaccines on the part of parents persists. In this book, Paul A. Offit, a national expert on vaccines, challenges the modern-day false prophets who have so egregiously misled the public and exposes the opportunism of the lawyers, journalists, celebrities, and politicians who support them. Offit recounts the history of autism research and the exploitation of this tragic condition by advocates and zealots. He considers the manipulation of science in the popular media and the courtroom, and he explores why society is susceptible to the bad science and risky therapies put forward by many antivaccination activists.

Rapp, Doris
In this breakthrough book, Dr. Doris Rapp offers a simple yet effective approach to handling 'problem' children. Is This Your Child? shows parents how to identify the common foods, chemicals, or common allergic substances that could be the culprits that cause some children or adults to feel unwell or act inappropriately. If your child is always sick, hyperactive, a slow learner, or cranky, the first question you should ask is not 'What drug should be prescribed?' or 'What have I done wrong as a parent?' Instead, find out the cause. Dr. Rapp gives sensible suggestions about how these reactions to foods and environmental factors can be recognized, prevented, and treated. With this information, many affected children should feel, act, behave, and learn better. If you can detect unsuspected environmental illness in your child--or yourself--you can change your lives so you're more content, happy, and free of illness.

Creative thinking and collaborative scientific research have advanced our understanding of autism, and we are now beginning to synthesize the data into evidence and theories. Autism: Current Theories and Evidence presents current theories about autism and the evidence that supports them. The goal is to show how the scientific method is revealing the biological bases of this spectrum of disorders, thereby leading the way to their treatment and prevention using evidence-based medicine. This book has 20 chapters divided into 6 sections: Molecular and Clinical Genetics; Neurotransmitters and Cell Signaling; Endocrinology, Growth and Metabolism; Immunology, Maternal-Fetal Effects and Neuroinflammation; Neuroanatomy, Imaging and Neural networks; and Environmental Mechanisms and Models. The subjects cover a wide range of current scientific work in the field of autism, with strong and growing evidence to support them, and demonstrate both the breadth and depth of current autism research. The reader is encouraged to consider how theories and the scientific method, in the hands of these and other dedicated researchers, are leading to greater knowledge and continued progress in autism research.
