Future studies of the impact of diet on autistic children "should be placebo-controlled where" the study participants would "receive capsules of the active agent or placebo." A large study based on a different design is being done at the University of Rochester. In that study, the children get special snacks while they are at their "educational program". The snacks contain, wheat, milk, both, or neither. Outside of those snacks, all the participating children are to be given a gluten-free casein-free diet. This way, theoretically, the children don't know if their diet is gluten and/or casein free, and the parents and other adults don't know either, so any behavior or gastrointestinal changes should be correlatable to the snacks.

Antioxidant nutrients appear to play an important role in protection against various disorders. However, isolation of specific antioxidant nutrients may not confer the same health benefits as do whole foods.

The general advice to emerge from this study is a confirmation of the legitimacy of exploring dietary elements of a treatment package, albeit under professional supervision and applied consistently over an agreed time scale.

Dr. Waring's results confirm what ARI had first reported in 1973: whenever extra vitamin B6 is given, it must be accompanied by extra magnesium, or adverse effects may be seen.

A combination of treatments may be effective in treating symptoms and behaviors that make it hard for individuals with autism to function. These may include psychosocial and pharmacological interventions.
Although Autistic Disorder is associated with several congenital conditions, the cause for most cases is unknown. The present study was undertaken to determine whether breastfeeding or the use of infant formula supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid is associated with Autistic Disorder. The hypothesis is that breastfeeding and use of infant formula supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid/arachidonic acid are protective for Autistic Disorder. This is a case-control study using data from the Autism Internet Research Survey, an online parental survey conducted from February to April 2005 with results for 861 children with Autistic Disorder and 123 control children. The analyses were performed using logistic regression. Absence of breastfeeding when compared to breastfeeding for more than six months was significantly associated with an increase in the odds of having autistic disorder when all cases were considered and after limiting cases to children with regression in development. Use of infant formula without docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid supplementation versus exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a significant increase in the odds of autistic disorder when all cases were considered and after limiting cases to children with regression in development. The results of this preliminary study indicate that children who were not breastfed or were fed infant formula without docosahexaenoic acid/arachidonic acid supplementation were significantly more likely to have autistic disorder.

As with all approaches to treating autism it is important to remember that some will work with varying degrees of success in one person, while not have any effect at all for another.

Although the exact nutritional needs may differ, the underlying need for nutritional support is consistent, and that is why Celltech's program is so valuable.

The most common chemical imbalances we encounter include over-methylation, under-methylation, metal-metabolism, pyrrole disorder, glucose dyscontrol, toxic substances, malabsorption, essential fatty acids.

One of the key tenants of the DAN Protocol is returning to a diet that is healthy. A Gluten Free/Casein Free diet is also an important step toward implementing the DAN Protocol.

The co-operation of a GP is essential, as some gluten-free items are available on prescription, if the GP is willing to prescribe them.
Parents and carers are becoming increasingly interested in the processes which may underlie the symptoms and, where possible, intervening and thereby minimising the presentation of the symptoms.

Avoid all dairy, chocolate, whole wheat and whole grains - limit sugars. Keep fruit consumption to two pieces of fruit per day, this includes juice. Lunch is a good time for leftovers, we are trying to push extra protein into them.

Our results demonstrate that carnosine can rescue neurons from zinc- and copper-mediated neurotoxicity and suggest that one function of carnosine may be as an endogenous neuroprotective agent.

Most children on the autism spectrum are very low in sulfate...Most people do see improvement with Epsom salts because the form of sulfur in the Epsom salts is already sulfate and readily available to the body.
So far about 65 people have responded to my informal survey. One adult and one child became irritable, one child had no change after one day. All the rest found dramatic improvement in behavior, language, even bike riding. 1-1/2 to 2 cups per tub.

Evidence supporting the efficacy of dietary interventions is accumulating, and pharmacists may be asked to offer a scientific explanation as to how changes to diet could help.
A study of sixty autistic children suggests that autism may be caused by inserting a G-alpha protein defect, the pertussis toxin found in the D.P.T. vaccine, into genetically at-risk children.

Autism may be a disorder linked to the disruption of the G-alpha protein, affecting retinoid receptors in the brain. Natural Vitamin A may reconnect the retinoid receptors critical for vision, sensory perception, language processing and attention.

In conjunction with high doses of pyridoxine, Mg salts benefit 40% of patients with autism, possibly by an effect on doparnine metabolism. Therapeutic administration of Mg salts is warranted, whether blood Mg levels are low or normal.

While many TS individuals have benefited from nutritional supplementation (often along with dietary and/or allergy control), families tend to experience frustration and a lack of direction when confronting this issue.

Despite the remarkably consistent research findings on vitamin B6 in the treatment of autism and despite it being immeasurably safer than any of the drugs used for autistic children, there are relatively few practitioners who advocate its use.

Although more long-term studies are needed before a firm conclusion can be drawn, it appears, from most literature studied, that a VLCARB is, if anything, protective against muscle protein catabolism during energy restriction, provided that it contains adequate amounts of protein.

Autistic children and adults show benefits when given large daily supplements of B6. There are no studies showing B6 to have failed to help some of the children; no reports show any children to have been harmed by the administration of megadose B6.

Vitamin C is an extremely safe substance which is immensely beneficial to the brain and body in a multitude of ways. Its potential for preventing and treating autism has barely been touched.

Vitamins are organic nutrients that are necessary in small amounts for normal metabolism and good health. Carotenoids are a group of about 600 nutrients, most converted in the body to vitamin A. Phytochemicals is simply a word that means plant chemicals.
Giving about 3 or 4 mg of magnesium per pound of body weight, up to 400mg per day for adults, enhances the effects of the B6 and protects against possible B6-induced magnesium deficiency.
