This website is run by an African American family raising an adolescent child with autism. After seeking answers for several years our son MJ was finally diagnosed in 1998 at age 5½. We were devastated and anxious to get any information on autism. What could we expect to happen? How would we help our youngest child and only son? There weren't many parent resources readily available at this time. We felt terribly alone and afraid. We needed to network with other parents to learn how to get through the day and then there were the long, endless nights. We were soon blessed by an online support group, the St. John's Autism List. There we were able to share our daily challenges and celebrate every joy!

Szatmari acknowledges environmental factors but omits social and emotional factors, although the importance of these for psychological and brain development is well established. Evidence indicating their role in autism comes from studies of Romanian adoptees. Szatmari believes that research that supports organic causation helps temper parental guilt. In my experience, helping parents understand their unwarranted feelings of blame about their children is more productive than allaying anxiety with premature certainty about causation.

The autistic spectrum is a convenient metaphor and an approximation. It's also metaphorical to say that the sun rises and falls; it's the kind of thing an astronomer can say today without fear of being misunderstood.
People with autism are more intelligent and able to function better than previously believed, but mistrust of doctors, biased tests and the Internet have bred myths about the condition... At a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, researchers presented reports showing that even autistics who do not speak can have above-average intelligence. They also offered additional studies disputing claims that vaccines can cause autism.

Estimates for the prevalence of mental retardation in autistic children and adults range from 25 to 70 percent or more, and when autistics do exhibit phenomenal skills (like Rain Man), researchers don't consider that "true" intelligence. Health workers routinely assess autistics using a standard IQ test known as the Wechsler test. But this test requires that children understand oral commands, a trait that many autistic children have trouble with. Cognitive neuroscientist Laurent Mottron of the Hôpital Rivière-des-Prairies, Montreal and colleagues noticed that autistic children did poorly on the verbal comprehension part of the Wechsler but exceedingly well on a part that tests non-verbal intelligence and reasoning.

Although symptoms of autism have been observed in children as young as eight to 12 months, some parents report that their child had normal or near-normal development and then experienced a regression, as their communication and/or social skills worsened, according to background information in the article. Estimates of the prevalence of this regressive pattern vary widely and depend for the most part on parental memories that may be biased by later events, the authors suggest.

It cannot be stressed too often that AUTISM IS NOT A MENTAL ILLNESS. It is true that the strain of being autistic in a world that is largely ignorant about and unsympathetic towards your problems leads to higher levels of anxiety, depression and suicide.

The take home message here is that researchers are still working to figure out what regressive autism is, it's foolish to say anything too dogmatic about it. An autistic person can experience multiple regressions, it's not like it's a one-time thing.
